Day 139: Olympics Boycott (08/08/2008)

Today, the Summer Olympics begin in China. I for one won't be watching as I believe the human rights record of the current Chinese government is repugnant. I remember as a high school student watching the students at Tiananmen square in 1989. Then being horrified as the Chinese government sent troops into arrest and kill their own citizens

The most lasting image of that protest is of the one man stopping a row of tanks (an image that has been banned in China and is blocked by Chinese Internet censors). The power of the individual in the cog of buearacy, one man's power to stop and do what was right. No one knows who he is or what happened to him. The idea is that he was probably executed shortly after the picture was taken.
