P365 D56: Leon

We headed for Leon from Juligalpa. This meant a bus ride to Managua then an express bus to Leon. Leon is considered to be the cultural capital of Nicaragua. Built in 1524 by the Spanish it is one of the oldest European cities in Central America. The area is surrounded by volcanoes and it is close to the Pacific Ocean. The city was built near an Indian community belonging to the Subtiva, who now live in a suburb of Leon. One of the most impressive aspects of Leon is its huge cathedreal. This is a picture showing its scale.
